Blog 1: Door Idea

Answering questions from the reading

  • Are there doors in your game? Yes
  • Can the player open them? Yes
  • Can the player open every door in the game? Yes (there is only one)
  • Or are some doors for decoration? No
  • How does the player know the difference? There is only one door and it will be textured differently than the other objects
  • Are doors you can open green and ones you can’t red? Is there trash piled up in front of doors you can’t use? Did you just remove the doorknobs and call it a day? Only one door, but the hole in the ground is covered by a pile of debris
  • Can doors be locked and unlocked? Yes, but not in the conventional sense, it can be unlocked by solving a puzzle
  • What tells a player a door is locked and will open, as opposed to a door that they will never open? It is the only door, and it stands out in the room
  • Does a player know how to unlock a door? Do they need a key? To hack a console? To solve a puzzle? To wait until a story moment passes? The player unlocks the door by solving a puzzle
  • Are there doors that can open but the player can never enter them? No
  • Where do enemies come from? Do they run in from doors? Do those doors lock afterwards? They are on the other side of the door but don't come through.
  • How does the player open a door? Do they just walk up to it and it slides open? Does it swing open? Does the player have to press a button to open it? After the puzzle, the bolder will be released and knock the wall over, and crash through the pile of debris on the floor to open a hole in the ground that the player can go through
  • Do doors lock behind the player? No, but they can't go back after jumping down the hole
  • What happens if there are two players? Does it only lock after both players pass through the door? Once through, the players can't go back but the door does not lock if only one goes through
  • What if the level is REALLY BIG and can’t all exist at the same time? If one player stays behind, the floor might disappear from under them. What do you do? If one player goes too far ahead, the player left behind is pulled to the player that went ahead
  • Do you stop one player from progressing any further until both are together in the same room? Yes, the player can't advance at the next door until everyone is there, the player left behind is pulled
  • Do you teleport the player that stayed behind? Yes
  • What size is a door? The door is going to be a medium-sized
  • Does it have to be big enough for a player to get through? Yes, and it will be bigger than the size of the player
  • What about co-op players? What if player 1 is standing in the doorway – does that block player 2? No, all players can go through and not block the door
  • What about allies following you? How many of them need to get through the door without getting stuck? 4 players can go through at once
  • What about enemies? Do mini-bosses that are larger than a person also need to fit through the door? No, no enemies need to go through the door

Looking at my door

After taking a look at the questions from the reading and answering them, this is what those answers are derived from. Putting all of my answers to the questions above, this is what my door becomes. There is a boulder at the top of a block, which is held back by another block. The boulder will be released once the player completes the puzzle, which will involve finding all of the hidden buttons in the room, and the boulder will roll down a ramp. At the bottom of the ramp the boulder will hit the wall colored in blue and knock it over, then it will hit a pile of debris on the ground inside the area at the end of the ramp. The debris will clear once the boulder hits it and will open up a hole in the ground for the player to go through.
